Temperature and Rainfall records smashed!!

 

 

 

Adelaide experienced it's driest Autumn in 167 years of record. 

The autumn rainfall for 2005 was 23.0 mm, 104.5 mm below the normal autumn rainfall of 127.5 mm. 

 

May's rainfall was 8.2 mm, recorded on 6 days. This compares with the normal of 62.6 mm, recorded on 13 days. This was the driest May since 1959 when only 3.8mm was recorded.

 

April's rainfall was 3.2 mm, recorded on 4 days. This is 35.5 mm below the normal of 38.7 mm on 8 days. This was the driest April since 1993 when 1.4mm was recorded.

 

March's rainfall  was 11.6mm, recorded on 2 days. This is 14.6 mm below the estimated normal of 26.2 mm on 6 days.

 

The total rainfall for the first five months of 2005 was 70.4mm. This was the driest first 5 months since 68.2mm was recorded in 1991. January's above average rainfall certainly helped the total figure.

 

 

 

 

Adelaide also recorded its warmest Autumn since 1923, and was the second warmest on record!

The mean maximum temperature for Autumn 2005 was 24.4°C, which is 1.9°C above the normal autumn mean maximum of 22.5°C. 

The mean minimum temperature for Autumn 2005 was 13.0°C, which was the warmest mean minimum since 1990 when 13.4°C was recorded.

 

May's mean maximum temperature was 20.9°C, which is 2.0°C above the normal May mean maximum of 18.9°C. This was the warmest May since 1947 when it was also 21.0°C.

 

April's mean maximum temperature was 26.1°C, which is 3.6°C above the normal April mean maximum of 22.5°C. This was the warmest April since 1923 when the mean maximum was 26.9°C and the second warmest April on record. The mean minimum of 14.4C was also the warmest since 1980.

 

March's mean maximum temperature for March 2005 was 26.2°C, which is 0.1°C above the normal March mean maximum of 26.1°C.

 

 

 

Individual temperature records were also broken throughout the state as a result of the above average temperatures. 

In April, temperatures were well above average across South Australia, with many stations recording mean monthly maximum temperatures between 4 and 5 degrees C above the long term average.

Record daily maximum temperatures were also reported at many long-term sites, including Oodnadatta with 42.1°C, the highest April temperature recorded in South Australia. About 45 stations in total recorded new April temperature records.
