25th-28th January 2005 |
| Another interesting week
of weather - a trough remained almost stationary over central and eastern
SA from Tuesday to Friday, kicking off storms each afternoon over areas
mainly east of the ranges. Very moist north-easterlies were dragged down
from QLD and interacted with the trough.
On Tuesday 25th, I drove out towards the Riverland in the late arvo after seeing convection starting to fire up in that direction. Another ASWA member, Andrew, was already up in the area and reporting a storm near Waikerie. Convection was a bit weak but still good enough to produce a few nice rain shafts and the occasional Cg... After viewing one cell for awhile at Waikerie we moved to Morgan to get a better view of another storm to the NE. As it got closer to sunset, Andrew decided to head NW towards Burra to go after another developing cell while I stayed put for a bit. I watched as that Burra cell exploded in the distance.... there was nothing headed my way except for a weak rain shaft so I headed home. Did manage to get some nice pics of the Burra cell and of the rain shaft as the sun went down.

| Wednesday 26th was Australia Day so everyone was free and keen to chase anything that popped up. I decided to make my move early and headed out in the direction of Mt Pleasant by about 11am. It was a tad early because it was after 1pm before any sign of convection started... I had parked myself on top of the eastern range with a great 360 degree view. At first the best convection was to my south and also to my NW. After awhile the southern stuff formed a weak rain shaft, but the NW convection seemed to be exploding in the distance. I also was getting updates from others in the Barossa that they were already seeing Cgs. I had to make a choice based on what I saw which meant heading towards the Barossa. Wrong move.... The southern cell exploded and dumped torrential rain and hail on Murray Bridge and continued almost stationary for several hours. Meanwhile I had caught up with other ASWA members near the Barossa and watched several very nice rain shafts and the occasional Cg... We stayed there for a bit before moving towards Kapunda and then further north to intercept another nice looking storm in the NW. Unfortunately all these storms were the same - nice structure, impressive rain shafts, but not much lightning... It was disappointing looking back towards the SE and seeing the monster that was the Murray Bridge cell. Check out Tim Thorpe's account of this storm here. |

| I was basically right in-between the 2 areas of cells and had to make a decision- I made the wrong one.... | trough right over Adelaide! | Note the large storms over the Murray Bridge area and just SE of Pt Wakefield. | |
