Wednesday 23rd November

Today was a bit of a let-down really. It showed a lot of promise but I probably needed to be a bit further south than where I was to get the best storms.

I stayed overnight at Narrabri and woke up to a very moist atmosphere with some rain areas to the north near Moree and already a bit of Cu around. After spending an hour at the Narrabri library checking models & forecasts, I decided to just head slightly NW out of town and watch the sky waiting for development.

The rain area up north had moved slightly SE so it was now almost east of me and was building cells on its edge closer to me over the Kaputar ranges. As the day went on these cells gradually got bigger and closer to Narrabri. There was the occasional distant rumble of thunder from them but not much.

To my west and north there continued to be Cu and Tcu going up and down but nothing much was happening. Eventually around 2pm, a couple of the Tcu began to grow larger updrafts and soon enough, there were a couple of nice rain shafts about. A couple of rumbles of thunder but these cells were not overly active. I did get one clear air bolt that scared me a little as it wasn't too far away. It goes to show you don't have to be under the storm to be in danger.

cells over Mt Kaputar... again Tcu going up NW of Narrabri rain shaft from Tcu

further convection closer cells gaining strength another Tcu goes up and down comes the rain again

rain shafts everywhere pity this is all these could do...more rain..

more rain... stronger Cb development to SE to the SE again and a nice sunset lol.....

So as you can see there wasn't much excitement today. Just plenty of convective showers really with the odd bolt or two. Driving down to Gilgandra later I could see the line of distant storms firing off down Dubbo way which is where I should've gone. I did get a nice sunset though as you can see above.
