 7th-14th April 2003

The week between the 7th and 14th April brought some unsettled weather to South Australia with an upper trough, NW cloud band, and a low, bringing patchy rain, storms, and showers.

A very slow-moving upper trough formed SW of the Bight on the 6th April as a weak surface trough moved through central SA. The trough brought 6mm to my house from some uneventful showers.

(left) Some nice Altocumulus developing on the 6th April.

(below) Interesting mid level cloud with showers on the 7th.

The upper trough took several days to move from its original position to just near Adelaide on Thursday 10th April. It had been producing isolated storms along its path on the west coast of SA with some isolated heavy falls on Eyre Peninsula. Early on Thursday morning, an SMS from Andrew Wall alerted me to a Cb off the coast. Seems that the trough was already producing some nice storms over Yorke Peninsula and the Gulf. Unfortunately I had to go to work but did grab a few pics beforehand.
A report on this day can also be found at the SA Weather site.

During the afternoon some isolated showers did affect the Adelaide metro area with my gauge recording only 1mm. Later after I had got home from work some heavy squally storms moved through the far southern suburbs of Adelaide, particulary affecting McLaren Vale. My family who lives there, reported a short period of very heavy rain, squally winds, and loud thunder at about 5.20pm. They received about 10mm from this storm, evident on radar above.
On Friday 11th April this upper trough moved over eastern SA and Western Victoria producing severe storms especially in the Mortlake/Warrnambool area. (see Vic visual sat pic above)
Some cumulus did build over the eastern suburbs of Adelaide early in the afternoon that went on to become some isolated storms in the Murraylands.

On Saturday 12th April a NW cloud band developed rather quickly over central Australia. By mid afternoon showers were starting to fall over metropolitan Adelaide. Some squally winds were evident in the first line to go through at about 3.45pm. I was driving home from work at the time and caught this 'dust blow-up' at Campbelltown (photo on left). Later in the evening a rain band moved through dumping 19mm in my gauge.

Sunday 13th April produced some nice Cumulus in the aftermath of the NW cloud band (photos above), while a secondary front combining with a low SW of Tasmania moved through Monday night (14th) into Tuesday morning dumping a further 9mm here. All up a satisfactory 35mm fell from the 3 systems. A nice Autumn break for some areas but in other areas, more rain is still desperately needed.
