The 25th January was an extremely hot day throughout South Australia and Victoria.
In Adelaide the temperature reached 44.1°C, which was only the seventh time since records began in 1887 that the maximum temperature in Adelaide has been 44°C or higher. The last time it occurred was on 23 January 1982 when the temperature reached 44.2°C. Another interesting fact is that four of the seven events occurred between the 9th and 13th January 1939, which included Adelaide's hottest ever day of 46.1°C on the 12th.
Three stations, Kadina (45.5°C), Parafield Airport (46.4°C) and Keith (45.4°C) all recorded their highest ever temperatures on the 25th.  While Hawker recorded their highest ever temp of 46°C on the 19th January.

Temperatures over the whole state were well above average in January.

Mean maximum temperatures were up to 3.6°C above normal in the Pastoral districts, and up to 4.1°C above normal in the Agricultural districts. The highest maximum recorded during the month was 47.8°C at Port Augusta Airport, in the Western Agricultural district on the 25th.
In Adelaide the mean maximum temperature for January 2003 was 31.4°C, which is 2.5°C above the normal January mean maximum of 28.9°C. The mean January maximum last year was 27.2°C. This has been the warmest mean maximum for January since 2001 when the mean maximum was a very hot 33.7°C.

Mean minimum temperatures were up to 2.6°C above normal in Pastoral districts and up to 2.2°C above normal in the Agricultural districts. The lowest minimum recorded during the month was 6°C at Coonawara in the Lower Southeast district on the 4th.
In Adelaide the mean minimum temperature for January 2003 was 18.0°C, which is 1.1°C above the normal January mean minimum of 16.9°C. Last January, the mean minimum was 15.3°C. This has been the warmest mean minimum for January since 2001 when the mean minimum was 20.3° C.

Maximum Summer Temperature, So Far the mean maximum temperature so far this summer for Adelaide was 29.6°C, which is 1.8°C above the average of 27.8°C. This has been the warmest first two months of summer since 2001 when the average was 31.0°C. Also, there have been 18 days where temperatures of 35.0°C or more were recorded, which is double the average of 9 days for the first two months of summer.

Rainfall: Adelaide's rainfall for January 2003 was 22.8 mm, recorded on 4 days. This is 0.8 mm above the estimated normal of 22.0 mm on 4 days. Last year, 20.6 mm was recorded in January on 8 days. This has been the wettest January since 1997 when 36.0 mm was recorded.
