20th January 2003

A broad trough entered SA a couple of days prior to this event producing storms in the north and west of the state. On the 19th some storms developed after sunset over Eyre peninsula and headed towards Adelaide. Unfortunately they all dissipated before reaching the metro coastline. At around 7.30am on the 20th, some remnants of the storms to affect Eyre Peninsula sparked up over Adelaide producing some light showers and the occasional rumble of thunder. Below are two photos of a storm that passed to the north of my house at Holden Hill.

Convective Outlook

For the rest of the day temperatures hovered around 35-38C with Dew points unusually high between 14 and 19C.  At about 3pm some convection began to appear to the north of Adelaide and on the sat pic on Eyre Peninsula and the Mid North. CAPE and LI's were looking good for storms to fire in these areas and as they started to fire we decided to head off in the direction of Clare to do some chasing.
Brendon and myself met Andrew & Kathy Wall, and Lennie Beardsall at Munno Para
where a nice rain shaft was visible to the north west. Drove to Roseworthy where we watched that shower disintegrate (only to be SMS later that it went into the pink on radar after it hit the hills east of Gawler).

Decided that Clare was the place to go so headed there for a quick bite to eat at about 6.30pm. Reports that Port Pirie was copping it and with the storm heading SE we travelled NW from Clare for about 30kms until we came upon a great view over a valley where we pitched our tripods and viewed the great spectacle... Cloud structure wasn't really that great but lightning frequency increased greatly in all directions as it got closer. We observed numerous Cg crawlers, pulsing, everything. A great show. Even got some strikes on my digi…and on the video. (captures below)
A trough line of storms were now moving NW towards us as well putting out numerous spectacular crawlers. We decided to head back to Clare and Auburn to intercept this and maybe head over to Eudunda and Morgan to keep ahead of the trough and get some nice night lightning shots. Unfortunately once we left Auburn the lightning collapsed very quickly and once we got to Eudunda it was only raining lightly so we decided to head home.
