20th February 2003

An infeed of tropical moisture moved over South Australia from the NW during this week producing significant rainfall in many areas.

In the far north of the state, Tieyon Station recorded 167 mm and Hamilton Station 105 mm to 9 am on the 21st, . At Tieyon, the rain was most intense for a two to three hour period between 1 and 4 am. Overall, the rain was welcomed by pastoralists, despite flooded creeks, collapsed dams and lots of washed away fences.  Tieyon actually ended up with 213mm for the month. Several places including Tarcoola and Coober Pedy received more rainfall out of the system than they received for the whole of 2002!
Rainfall totals over 100 mm were confined to isolated stations in the Northwest and Far North districts. Rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm were reported from much of the remainder of the Northwest and Far North districts, while totals below 50 mm were mostly reported from the Northeast district.

In the Agricultural Districts, rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm were reported from eastern parts of the Eyre peninsula, and over much of the Northern and Murray districts. Over the remainder of the agricultural districts totals were in the range 25 to 50 mm.
The highest rainfall in the Agricultural districts was 97 mm at Pinnaroo in the Murray Mallee district and 96 mm at Parilla (Murray Mallee) and Lameroo (Upper Southeast).

House suffering from flash flooding at Richmond

Adelaide recorded 57mm from the system of which 33.8mm fell on the 20th. This is the highest 24hr total for February since 1st February 1974 when 61.2mm was recorded! The deluge did cause some minor flash flooding in the suburbs. Particularly in Richmond, Novar Gardens, and Glenelg North.
Adelaide ended up with 63mm in February which was the highest February rainfall since 1976 when 64mm was recorded, and the 95mm for summer was the highest since the 124.6mm recorded in 1993/94.
At my house at Holden Hill, I recorded 46mm on the 20th, followed by 23mm on the 21st, making a total of 69mm from the system. A total of 82.5mm was recorded for February.
